Module 1: Example 1

What follows is an example of a study that combines the traditional and community-placed approach.

Researcher Olivia wants to study childhood incidents of asthma that are increasing in a local Latino community. She designs a study, has the interview translated, obtains IRB approval and sends her two bilingual research assistants to the neighborhood. They proceed to go door to door asking to interview neighborhood residents who are over 18. When a resident answers the door, they introduce the study, cover the informed consent information and verify if the person is interested in being interviewed. If yes, they conduct the interview and then thank the participant and move on to the next house. After interviewing people 30 people, they analyze the interview responses and write a manuscript to share what they’ve learned with their peers. Researcher Olivia takes the results and starts to write a grant proposal to continue this research.
